This event is a Community Project coordinated by the Bethesda Foundation & has delighted thousands of people from all over the world ~ a unique way to see in the New Year.

The highlight of the evening is walking and singing with handmade lanterns in the parade which snakes through the village.  Thereafter you can enjoy local foods at a braai (barbeque)at the Bethesda Arts Centre ~ accompanied by dancing with a live band under the stars.

Join the villagers for a quirky market where you can buy anything from homemade dolmades to chimes!

 

Quality 2nd Hand Goods, Books, Clothing, Homemade Cakes, Eats, Sweets & goodies @ the Melting Pot a few meters from the Owl House.

 

Buy scones and coffee at teatime or something more substantial for lunch end enjoy it in the garden under the trees.

 

Make a day of it in  our village ~ Owl House ~ galleries ~ artist studios ~ brewery ~ cheese maker ~ book shop ~ & more (remember that the road from Graaff-Reinet is now tarred.)

Music ~ Art Exhibitions ~ Theatre ~ Open Air Performances ~ Village Market ~ Children’s Theatre ~ Craft Workshops ~ Clowning Workshop

 

Local artists will be exhibiting throughout the festival.  Nieu Bethesda is internationally known for the high caliber of artists that are drawn to the village by the legacy of Helen Martins and the Owl House. Sculptor Frans Boekkooi, Ceramic Artist Charmaine Haynes, Potter Martin Haines Painters Raymond Westraadt, Dirkje Louw, Thea van Staden, Joanne Reen and others will be exhibiting at various galleries and Studios in the village.

 

There is a fantastic range of musical talent to entertain and inspire. Jazz musician Tina Schouw, versatile Jamie Jupiter, Guitarist Kathy Raven, Award winning singer-songwriters Riku Latti and Les Javan, Jako Loots and Albert Meintjies.

 

On the theatrical front, legendary Elzabι Zietsman will be performing Koue Kos Skat and Kos en Konsert.   Owl directed by Jon Keevy, is a one woman theatrical coming of age journey.  The children’s theatre program includes Jungle Theatre’s Vallende Maan directed by Jaqueline Domissa. Local school children will show off their talents in a show developed by the children themselves and directed by Paula Kingwill. Dusty Kenyon directs local Nieu Bethesda residents through a hysterical farce that will have the audience falling off their seats.

 

 

Festinos will be given the unique opportunity to join an origami artist who will teach us the ancient Japanese art of folding paper. 

 

 

Coinciding with Global Frackdown Day on the 22nd of September we will be running a mini documentary film festival with films that educate about fracking and related issues.

 

To add the festival spirit there is a free stage that will stage events throughout the festival as well as jugglers and stilt walkers wandering the dusty streets.

The festival is entirely community driven as there is no corporate sponsorship and all artists are traveling from far and wide for the joy of performance.  This family friendly weekend excursion will be an experience you will never forget!

 

 

 

Festival Happenings at the Bethesda Art Centre

 

Galleries:

During the festival, the Arts Centre will have two galleries open from 9pm till 8.30pm, where limited edition prints, stained glass, and textile wall hangings, can be seen and purchased.

 

Open Studios:

Guests are invited to meet the artists and enjoy our spectacular premises.

There will be two ticketed events during the festival;

 

Saturday 22 September  , 2012, 6.30pm

Official opening by Professor Pippa Skotnes of the gallery of myth quilts at the First People Centre, Bethesda Arts Centre.

A /Xam Story - The opening will be followed by a performance presented by Centre artists.
