Frankie’s Keyholders

The delicate tips of springbuck horns make keyrings that are surprisingly sculptural and good to hold in the hand. Frank Kraai collects horns during hunting season, dries them in the sun, sandpapers them clean, drills a hole for the ring, and lightly seals it with a varnish. “I saw the idea somewhere and tried to make one myself, not knowing if it would work.”After a few attempts, it worked. Now Frankie sells out long before the next hunting season comes round. He also makes leather keyrings in the shape of an owl – another common Karoo resident. Customers appreciate handcrafted items that are truly indigenous, and buy these keyholders at Sneeuwitjie or outside the Owl House. Phone: 049 – 841 1656 or 072 440 9662.
